Q & A with William English

Question from colleague: I have a client who for years now has had problems with workstation connection issues. They have had their Intuit Solution Provider (ISP) out for repairs, upgraded to V10.0, and swear that their router has been checked out, yet their workstations still lose connection to POS on a regular basis. I am no expert with network, router and hardware/Windows issues. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Have you edited their hosts file? Tech support will sometimes edit the host file for the workstation to put the IP address and computer name into this file. That works until the router is rebooted and then the server grabs another IP. I would also remove the wsactivity.xml and switch between single and multi-user mode.
 

A colleague of Will's has a new Point of Sale (POS) client who would like to have some type of Training Manual after the software install and training. She informed Will that she hasn't seen training materials that would qualify for this, nor does there seem to be a book out yet on POS version 10.0. He directed her to the QuickBooks Point of Sale v10.0 Store Operations Handbook that he co-authored with Steve Green of SDG Business Solutions, an ISP working in the SF Bay Are. It is designed to be a day in the life of a retailer starting with sales, returns, PO's, and receving. It is the leave behind that Will uses with our clients when he performs a new installation and it allows the end user to move through their tasks more efficiently.

As a QuickBooks consultant, Will English supports QuickBooks clients across the country, including Hawaii. Much of the work is performed remotely but there are times in which he needs to complete the work onsite. From solving client issues and answering quick questions to completely setting up new QuickBooks systems, we are able to help.

This month alone Will has assisted clients onsite from San Diego to LA County, and this week he's working onsite with a new floor covering client to set-up and configure their QB Enterprise Solutions system for up to 10 users. With a vast amount of inventory and client sales, it's imperative that they implement a robust system that allows them to do such things as accurately manage inventory, automatic price adjustments, use the advanced reporting, and take advantage of the many features in the multi-user mode. Enterprise Solutions has a number of security settings that Will needs to get right as well as he wants to make sure the staff is…
