ProGreen Expo 2014

Submitted by Will on February 10, 2014

It’s time for Will to teach at another trade show/conference– the ProGreen Expo in Denver, CO. The topics he will teach are:
1. The Top 10 Inventory Best Practices for Retailers and Wholesalers.
It’s so important to maintain an accurate inventory count and understand the best practices so you can maximize your time, become more productive and efficient while remaining profitable. Some simple steps make all the difference.

2. Understanding QuickBooks Financial Software for Landscape Contractors. Understanding job costing features with QuickBooks Financial software and your QuickBooks Financial Reporting just makes good business sense. Tracking a number of factors and analyzing the results aids in accurate decision making, ensuring that all costs have been properly invoiced, etc. Understanding the financial reports allows for intelligent decision making affecting the success or failure of a company’s operations.
Business owners and decision makers will receive expert teaching and important takeaways to implement in their businesses.

At ProGreen, attendees can meet with vendors and take advantage of having over 300 green industry companies under one roof. It draws approximately 4,500 attendees including greenhouse growers, landscape architects, nursery professionals and practitioners of the green industry. With companies representing all aspects of the green industry, attendees have no problem finding great solutions to enhance their daily operations.

ProGreen EXPO also includes over 100 education sessions and certifying exams along with training programs and networking opportunities. For more information, visit www.ProGreenExpo.com.

The Baseball Trade Show 2013

Submitted by Will on December 19, 2013

It was a great delight for Will English to be invited for the third consecutive year to the annual Baseball Trade Show. This year it was in sunny Orlando, FL. He was able to just miss the cold spell we had in San Diego, CA.

The Baseball Winter Meetings is the annual gathering of members of The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, Inc. (d/b/a Minor League Baseball), Major League Baseball, and their affiliated parties. http://www.milb.com/milb/events/wintermeetings.jsp

The Baseball Trade Show is an opportunity for some of the leading folks in the baseball business to come together in one location; from owners and general managers, stadium operations and buyers, to sales and marketing representatives. Attendees included Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball (MLB) representatives. The exhibiting companies included manufacturers and distributors of apparel, gift items, baseball souvenirs and promotional products, service companies, and much more.

Will English had the privilege of showcasing the QuickBooks Point of Sale (QBPOS) software and speaking with several team managers about the benefits of the QBPOS system for their business needs. Several MLB teams have already implemented the QBPOS system and are finding it invaluable. The San Diego Padres, LA Dodgers, and Milwaukee Brewers are clients of ours using the QBPOS system.

I’ve shared this quote from a MLB team Assistant Clubhouse Manager once before but would like to include it again here as it encompasses the importance of the client’s satisfaction with the product and customer service:
"We have used the QuickBooks Point of Sale system for over three years now. With English Management’s fantastic customer service and training along with the excellent product QuickBooks offers, I couldn't see us managing our inventory any other way. I would compare it to having power windows on a car, then later buying a car without power windows! One of the major benefits this system offers to us is at any time we can look into our previous history and see what equipment we have issued to our players. So whenever we have a player that was with us at some point, then goes to the Minor Leagues and returns at a later time, we can just go into his past history to see all the items he was issued and then we can issue him new equipment before he even arrives.”
Jason Shawger
Milwaukee Brewers, Home Clubhouse

We are pleased to offer the Major League Equipment Managers an affordable fully implemented QuickBooks (QB) inventory management solution using Intuit’s Point of Sale (POS) software. In an effort to support an important program, for every system purchased, EMS will donate $100.00 to the Major League Baseball Clubhouse Managers Association (MLBCMA) Bat Boy Scholarship Program.

California to Increase the Min. Wage in 2014

Submitted by Will on October 21, 2013

You may have heard that Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the bill to increase the California minimum wage in two separate increments. The first will be from $8 per hour to $9 per hour effective July 1, 2014. Then on January 1, 2016, it will increase to $10 per hour. This comes during the fast food industry strikes to raise the federal wage. Some oppose this saying that it will hurt businesses and in turn, cause a reduction in jobs. There are always two sides with differing viewpoints but regardless, there are compliance recommendations that employers must follow.

ADP Payroll Services provided a great article on this topic including compliance recommendations in an email to their members. They explained: "The minimum wage increase also impacts the minimum salary requirements for employees who are exempt from overtime. To be classified as an exempt employee in California, very specific requirements must be met. The employee must, among other things, generally be paid a salary of no less than two times the state minimum wage. Assembly Bill 10 means that the salary requirement for exemption will increase to $720 per week (or $3120 per month) on July 1, 2014. On January 1, 2016, the salary requirement increases to $800 per week (or $3466.67 per month). For more information on exemptions, visit the Department of Industrial Relations website by clicking here.
Compliance Recommendations:
California employers must pay all non-exempt employees at least $9.00 per hour beginning July 1, 2014. In addition, employers must post a new minimum wage poster reflecting the increase by July 1, 2014. Once published, California's updated minimum wage poster will be available for download from the State & Federal Resources section of our website. Employers with exempt employees must also ensure that their salaries will meet the new minimums."

We Have Relocated Our Office

Submitted by Will on September 05, 2013

We are settling in to our office in downtown San Diego. We still have some boxes to unpack but the bulk of it is done. It has been a smooth transition and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our dedicated employees and great vendors.

On the day of the move, we arrived at the previous location bright & early. The moving company showed up several minutes before their scheduled time to go over some logistics and the guys were ready to start work on time. They were professional and spot-on in their work.

The team from Digital I/O, the company who takes care of our IT needs (we’ve written about them before), moved and installed all of our office equipment. They didn’t leave our new location that day until they made certain that everything was properly set-up and working. When we arrived the next business day, we were ready to sit down and begin working just as if we had never even been unplugged.

We thank all of the vendors who helped make our move such a success and our customers for your patience during this transition. We look forward to continuing to serve your business needs!
